Storytelling is a great tool to use for information-sharing. Research has shown that information is better retained when told through a story. People retain only about one-fifth of what they read, but they retain four-fifths of the images they form in their minds.

Questions to consider when creating your story:

  • Who is the protagonist?
  • What is the hook?
  • What keeps it interesting?
  • Where is the conflict?
  • Have you included telling details?
  • Is the meaning clear?

When telling a story with your data, keep two elements in mind:

  1. Data visualization, which is any visual representation of data, including charts, graphs, and pictures, and
  2. Data storytelling, which is a compelling narrative crafted around and anchored by compelling data.

These three key concepts will help you successfully tell a story with your data:

  1. Know your audience. For example, who are they? What do they care about?
  2. Direct your audience. Where do you want your audience to look? Eliminate clutter from any visualizations.
  3. Use words to explain key takeaways.

This webinar from the Evaluation and Sustainability Training and Technical Assistance (ES TTA) team at RTI International and the Center for Justice Innovation (formerly the Center for Court Innovation) shares tips on how to use storytelling to share compelling narratives and offers guidance for telling a story with your data.
