Second Chance Act Grantee Training: Engaging Local Employers–A Sector-Based Approach

November 30, 2017

Hosted by the National Reentry Resource Center with funding support from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance

On November 30th and December 1st, the National Reentry Resource Center hosted the 2017 Second Chance Act Training for Technology Career-Based Training Program grantees. This training prepared corrections, reentry, and workforce development directors and managers as well as direct service providers for developing system-wide, sustainable reentry and employment programming. Speakers at this training provided unique insights into opportunities to support increased access to employment opportunities for the reentry population.

Part 1:

This session includes a panel discussion with Scott Crago, a plant manager at JSP International, a car-part manufacturing plant, and Haley George, a quality auditor at JSP International and a former SCA Technology Career-Based Training program participant, on creating job opportunities for people returning home after incarceration. In this session, Crago shared his experience partnering with the Middle Tennessee Rural Reentry (MTRR) program in Franklin County, TN, to hire people formerly incarcerated. In addition, George candidly shared her experience in the criminal justice system, participating in the MTRR injection molding program, and accepting employment at JSP International prior to being released from jail.

Part II:

This session includes a discussion with Sherri Moses, a policy analyst at CSG Justice Center, Christine Hopkins, the director of MTRR and a FY 15 Second Chance Act Technology Career-Based Training Program grantee, and Scott Crago, plant manager at JSP International, on best practices for engaging employers in hiring people with criminal records.
