Launch of Fair Employment Opportunities Project

Public Interest Law Center of PhiladelphiaThe Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity, and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law have launched the Fair Employment Opportunities Project. Pennsylvania’s Criminal History Record Information Act allows employers to consider criminal records only to the extent that it relates directly to the job for which the applicant has applied. However, the law has not been effectively enforced. The Fair Employment Opportunities Project was created to ensure better enforcement of the law. The project consists of three components: the creation of partnerships with local companies to develop and implement best practices for hiring, the provision of legal representation for individuals who have experienced employment discrimination because of their criminal record, and the execution of a public awareness campaign about this issue.
