How do evaluations address unexpected major events like the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and even economic recessions that affect their studies? This infographic discusses practical strategies evaluators can use to address major events. They include:

  1. Appropriately documenting program changes by:
    • Developing a pre-, mid-, and post-disruption logic model
    • Collecting data from participants and staff to understand how programming was adapted
    • Analyzing outcome data separately for pre-, mid-, and post-disruption participants
  2. Adapting the data collection plan by:
    • Using virtual or online methods (e.g., video- or phone-based interviews, online surveys)
    • Ensuring that participant protections are in place for any changes in the data collection plan (e.g., confidentiality, institutional review board approval)
    • Ensuring that all eligible participants are included

This infographic from the Evaluation and Sustainability Training and Technical Assistance (ES TTA) team at RTI International and the Center for Justice Innovation (formerly the Center for Court Innovation) highlights how reentry programs can address disruptions to program activities.
